Designing a place to think

Why build it

Every notes app I tried wanted to be a second brain. I wanted a first draft — somewhere the cursor is already blinking before I've finished deciding to write. Fieldnote started as a weekend build with one rule: from cold start to typing in under a second.

The approach

The editor opens to today. No file tree, no titles required, no formatting toolbar until you select text. Entries file themselves by date, and a thin sidebar of past days is the only navigation. The typography does the organizing: one measure, one size, generous leading.

Being my own client cut both ways. I shipped faster without a roadmap, but every clever idea had to survive a week of my own daily use — most didn't. The sync engine outlived four different sidebar designs.

Where it landed

Fieldnote is where most of my writing starts now, including the essays on this site. It taught me more about restraint than any client project: when you use a thing every morning, decoration you loved on Monday is friction by Friday.
